Privacy Policy

Effective date:

Soft Reader is a Chrome extension that helps people read PDF and DOCX documents in a softer dark reading mode. This policy explains what the extension processes and what it does not do.

What Soft Reader processes

  • Document URLs that you open directly in Chrome when Soft Reader is enabled.
  • Local PDF and DOCX files that you explicitly open or drag into the reader.
  • Reading preferences such as language, dark-mode intensity, tone preset, zoom level, and whether the extension is turned on or off.

How Soft Reader uses that information

  • Local documents are rendered inside your browser so you can read them in Soft Reader.
  • Remote document URLs are requested only to load the file you asked to open.
  • Preferences are stored in Chrome sync storage so your settings can persist across your Chrome profile.

What Soft Reader does not do

  • Soft Reader does not sell your data.
  • Soft Reader does not use advertising trackers.
  • Soft Reader does not upload your document contents to the developer's own servers.
  • Soft Reader does not require an account.

Data sharing

Soft Reader only interacts with:

  • The website or file location that already hosts the document you choose to open.
  • Chrome services that store your extension settings through Chrome sync.

Soft Reader does not share your documents with any separate analytics or marketing provider.

Data retention

  • Local files are used only for the reading session you start.
  • Generated object URLs are released when the session ends.
  • Saved preferences remain in Chrome storage until you change them or remove the extension data.

Security and permissions

Soft Reader requests permissions that are directly related to its single purpose:

  • storage: save reading preferences and language.
  • tabs: open the reader and update the current tab when Soft Reader is turned on or off.
  • webNavigation: detect direct document navigations for supported files.
  • Host permissions for http, https, and file URLs: open supported PDF and DOCX documents in the custom reader.

Changes to this policy

If Soft Reader changes how it handles data, this policy should be updated before the new behavior is published.
